YACA REGIONAL RESIDENCY
YACA Regional Residency expands the existing YACA model by selecting a leading established ensemble to be Ensemble-in-Residence at a regional musical institution.
In 2009 the program will be held at Bundanon, the ‘living arts centre’ and treasured properties of Arthur and Yvonne Boyd, across two one-month stages. While living in this fully supported environment and unique cultural setting, you will be mentored by the Goldner String Quartet, acclaimed as Australia’s ‘indisputably pre-eminent chamber music ensemble’. You will be given time to study and perform new repertoire, as well as develop leadership, management and performance presentation skills as an ensemble.
Interaction between the successful ensemble, the Shoalhaven region and surrounding communities through performances, workshops, open rehearsals and discussions will remain key features of this expanded program.
“It was fantastic to work with the Goldner String Quartet, really great to have such a long period just to concentrate on rehearsals, and so nice to establish a relationship with other musicians in our host community.” YACA Regional Residency participant
MENTORS: Goldner String Quartet
The Goldner String Quartet launched in 1995 and has performed regularly together since 1991, as the four string players from the highly acclaimed Australia Ensemble (resident at the University of New South Wales). The quartet is named after Richard Goldner, renowned pedagogue, inventor, and founder of the original Musica Viva Australia. The players are all well known to Australian and international audiences through solo performances and recordings. All have occupied principal positions in organisations such as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Australian Chamber Orchestra.
The Quartet regularly appears at major music festivals around Australia in addition to national tours for Musica Viva. The members of the quartet have been a mainstay of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville since 1993 and have just returned from highly successful appearances at music festivals in Finland, France and the U.K. In 1997 the Goldner String Quartet made its debut at the Wigmore Hall in London, with return engagements there in 1999 and 2003. They have appeared at the UK festivals of Cheltenham, Newbury and Brighton and at the Festival du Sceaux in France. In October 2001 the quartet made its American debut with concerts at the prestigious 92nd St Y in New York and in Washington DC. The Goldners have undertaken extensive tours of New Zealand, and performed at the Jeju Muisc Festival in Korea in 2006. More recently the quartet has collaborated with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in their festivals celebrating the works of Beethoven and Shostakovich. The Goldner Quartet received the Australian Music Centre Award in 2000, for the ‘Best Performance of an Australian Composition’, for their performance of Carl Vine’s Quartet No.3. The instruments of the Quartet are maintained by Mr Gabor Balogh, Master Violin Repairer and Restorer (Sydney).
Stage 2 Participants: The Silvan Quartet

The Silvan Quartet was formed in 2005 by Kate Sullivan (violin), Emma Hunt (violin) and Rhianwen Bramble (viola) through the University of Melbourne Chamber Music Program directed by William Hennessy, and was joined by Lily Thornton (cello) in 2008.
Since its formation the quartet has given numerous performances around Melbourne and regional Victoria, including a performance as part of the 2009 Montsalvat Chamber Music Series. They have also been featured several times on 3MBS FM.
They are regularly tutored by members of the Flinders Quartet, renowned chamber musicians William Hennessy and Janis Laurs, and have also performed for the Tokyo String Quartet.
In early 2009 the Silvan Quartet attended the Chamber Music Summer School in Mt. Buller where they worked closely with Keith Crellin, Christian Wojtowicz and Rachel Bremner, along with the Flinders Quartet.

Since its formation, the quartet has been seen in regular performances around Sydney and has already played in some of Sydney’s most prestigious venues including the City Recital Hall, Angel Place. They have also given performances for Musica Viva Australia, which included a collaboration with world-renowned didgeridoo performer and composer William Barton, in regional Australia.

In 2008 they were one of five string quartets to receive a scholarship for the Chamber Music Residency at the prestigious Banff Centre, Canada. There they spent their residency performing, recording and receiving lessons from the world class faculty at Banff. After their return they performed at the Crossroads Festival and were featured at the Musica Viva Festival as part of the Australian Youth Orchestra’s Chamber Music Camp.
Orava String Quartet has participated in master classes and studied with members of some of the worlds leading chamber ensembles, including the Emerson String Quartet, St Lawrence String Quartet, Schoenberg String Quartet, Artemis String Quartet, Brentano String Quartet, Orford String Quartet Australian String Quartet, Julliard String Quartet and the Grainger String Quartet.
