The Australian Youth Orchestra in association with the West Australian Opera will be performing one of the greatest operas of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes, as part of the 2010 Perth International Arts Festival.

On this occasion of its WA premiere, Peter Grimes will be performed by 70 musicians of The Australian Youth Orchestra with five hailing directly from Perth together with a superb international cast.

The Australian Youth Orchestra’s Chief Executive, Colin Cornish said: “It is a great honour for the Australian Youth Orchestra to be associated with an amazing masterpiece like Peter Grimes and a fantastic opportunity for the country’s finest young musicians to be part of a fully staged opera production.”

“The Australian Youth Orchestra prides itself on delivering powerful performances and this production is sure to convey another fine example of the quality of music making for which AYO is renowned.”

This new production of Peter Grimes was created by acclaimed Australian director Neil Armfield and will be conducted by one of the country’s most sought after composers and Artistic Director of the West Australian Opera, Richard Mills.

Featuring an epic tenor role by Grammy Award winner Antony Dean Griffey and a breathtaking orchestral score performed by The Australian Youth Orchestra, Peter Grimes encapsulates one man’s struggle against cruel fate and an even crueller society. When Peter Grimes, an outsider in a small fishing village, learns of the death of his apprentice, he and his entire village set out for retribution.

Performances will be held at His Majesty’s Theatre on Tuesday 9th, Thursday 11th and Saturday 13th February 2010 at 7.30pm. Ticket prices start from $40.00. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.ayo.com.au.
